Early in my career, when I was studying the Industrial Revolution
of the 19th century, I wondered what it would be like to live and work
in a time of such far-reaching social and economic change. Now, aware
that ours is a time of equally great change, I know that it is simultaneously
exciting and bewildering to set outcomes and map paths to futures we
can barely imagine.
My professional focus has always been on the world of work. What do
people need in order to thrive and do their best work? How can organizations
be both stable and flexible enough to serve a world in such flux? What
beliefs and values will guide us reliably through information glut and
apparent resource scarcity to a sustainable future in which there is
enough work and enough leisure for all?
